Emergency water damage

Water pouring in right now? Do these things first.

Shut off the main water valve, stay clear of water near outlets, move what you can off the floor, photograph the damage, and call for extraction. What you do in the first hour decides how much can be dried in place.

The first hour, step by step

  1. Stop the water

Close the main valve, usually in the meter box near the street or where the line enters the house. For one fixture, close the valve behind it.

  2. Make it safe

Don't walk through water near outlets or cords. Stay out from under sagging ceilings. Keep kids and pets away from sewage or floodwater.

  3. Document

Photograph each room, the damage and the source before anything is moved or thrown away.

  4. Protect belongings

Lift furniture, rugs, electronics and papers off wet floors. Keep the AC running to hold humidity down.

  5. Call for extraction

Professional extraction and drying within the first day saves the most flooring and drywall.

Questions

What should I do first when water is leaking?

Shut off the main water valve, turn off power to wet areas if you can do it from dry ground, then call for extraction. Take photos before moving things.

Is Dryvale available 24/7?

Availability depends on the independent companies serving your area. Call and we will tell you who can respond and when.

Should I call my insurance company first?

Stop the water and prevent further damage first; policies expect that. Report the claim the same day if you can.
